In a world where almost everyone has a smartphone, it’s safe to assume your company relies on workforce mobility to some degree. When the way you manage mobility has a direct correlation to operational success, it’s time to focus on how to best make it work for your business. That’s where enterprise mobility management (EMM) comes into play.

There are several different enterprise mobility adoption stages. Some companies use mobility on an “ad hoc” basis. For instance, employees have access to their work email on their mobile phones. Or they use file sharing sites such as Google Drive, which can be used on any device with internet access.

Other companies develop full-blown strategic mobility plans. These companies may provide phones, tablets, or wearables to employees, or encourage “bring your own device” (BYOD). Some even develop apps to make business tasks more efficient. For instance, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston built mobile apps for bedside documentation and order entry. They also use iPads for emergency room and intensive care unit operations.

So how do you know if your company should take mobility adoption to the next level?

EMM solutions provide simplicity and constant access to data. For instance, field technicians can remotely contact experts for help. Likewise they carry customer data and job information on their device at all times. If you’re looking for an increase in productivity and even cost savings, it’s time to fully invest in an EMM solution.

Beyond the obvious benefits to field service professionals, Field Service Matters identified five ways mobility helps field supervisors. Mobility provides accessibility to information everywhere and anywhere. And it can help field supervisors make real-time updates to schedules.

Whether an EMM investment makes sense for your workplace depends on many factors. What role will mobile technology play in your company? What value can it provide if implemented better? Does mobility make your employees’ jobs easier and communication more effective in the field?

Gartner predicts that wearables could help companies save up to $1 billion annually by solving problems faster. The Massachusetts Bay Transport Authority (MBTA) plans to take advantage of EMM by giving field engineers wearable smart glasses. The field engineers can communicate more effectively with experts back at the MBTA base and avoid repair delays.

Of course, every technology comes with challenges. But there are ways to manage the challenges associated with EMM.

CIO Insight shares tips to manage financial and security risks. It includes limiting domestic usage and enforcing an acceptable use policy.

Mobility offers great benefits for businesses. Perhaps it’s time to consider an EMM solution.
