The Androids are here – are you ready for them?

Many analysts have predicted a year ago that Android will soon become the most dominant mobile OS. We heard in May that Android is outselling the iPhone in the United States. Now it’s outselling the BlackBerry as well!

You can love it or hate it, but you can’t say it’s not powerful. The OS has a very strong infrastructure allowing built-in multi-tasking, cloud based synchronization, and more. The UI may not look as perfect as the iOS one, but it sure is modern, well designed, and at the same time “open” for additions.

According to a report from market researcher The NPD Group: “More smartphones running Google’s Android mobile operating system were sold in the second quarter than any other OS, knocking RIM from the top spot for the first time since the fourth quarter of 2007”.

Thanks to strong sales of new models such as Sprint’s (NYSE: S) HTC EVO 4 and Motorola’s (NYSE: MOT) Droid X, the Android OS accounted for 33 percent of all smartphones purchased between April and June, outpacing RIM (NASDAQ: RIMM) and Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) at 28 percent and 22 percent, respectively.

“For the second consecutive quarter, Android handsets have shown strong but slowing sell-through market share gains among U.S. consumers,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD, in the report. “While the Google-developed OS took market share from RIM, Apple’s iOS saw a small gain this quarter on the strength of the iPhone 4 launch.”

So, now that predictions are proven to be true – how do you get prepared to your next mobility project? Do you have plans to roll out an Android based solution? Cloud based application that can run seamlessly on Android and iPhone devices?

If your organization is not considering Android as part of the long term mobile strategy, here’s a nice article that talks about: 10 Reasons You Need Android’s Mobile Tech.

The significant ones (in my opinion) are:

  1. Good exchange support, more enterprise security features such as remote wipe and password policies.
  2. Great availability across networks (AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon…)
  3. Huge devices choice
  4. With Android 2.2, tethering is made easy – this can reduce network costs significantly
  5. The Android OS is progressing so fast, it promises more new capabilities, more applications and faster bugs fixing.

Interesting, don’t you think? Well, if you don’t, you should…
