Hello,
Simon Morris here!
Welcome to Service Business Review.
As I
write this message, we are a couple of weeks on from the closing
ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games and the baton was passed from Bejing
to London. Now I have witnessed several sporting spectacles in my
lifetime but the opening ceremony in Beijing simply took my breath
away. The artistic depiction of Chinese history and the music, dance,
and song were fantastic and all was performed to perfection. The
opening and closing ceremonies, however, are only a part of the story.
The main challenge is the smooth-running of the event. Ensuring minimal
service issues during the Olympics is a colossal task, and, in this
issue, we will explore the topic of managing a workforce during a
special event.
A
special event suggests something that is not typically part of
day-to-day activity. In the sporting world it could refer to the FIFA
World Cup or European Championships, in the political world it could
refer to a Global Summit that may attract demonstrations and in the
Meteorological world it could refer to a hurricane. All of these events
require the mobilization of a variety of resources and, in many cases,
the time to do so is short. Effectively managing a workforce during a
special event is critical from several perspectives; security, safety
and cost being three.
SBR
sat down with individuals involved in the workforce management process
at the Olympic Games in Beijing and the European Championships in
Austria and Switzerland to get their thoughts on this fascinating
subject.
