The Nexus of Forces, as defined by research organization Gartner to include cloud, information, mobile and social, will become mainstream over the coming year and as a result new technology requirements will be created, and new competitive realities will emerge, according to the firm’s latest report.

In 2014, the enterprise software market will experience the greatest level of growth, disruption and new opportunities for the last 13 years, according to Tom Eid, research vice president at Gartner. And by 2017, the Nexus of Forces-based IT purchases will account for over 26% of the total enterprise software market revenue, an increase from 12% in 2012, representing over $104 billion of the new global enterprise software revenue from the Nexus of Forces in 2017, Eid added.

Cloud, information, mobile and social need to be analyzed and understood not only as non-connected and independent from one another, but as a combination as well. The vendor community has been very excited when cloud, information, mobile, social and other technologies are concerned, but adoption in enterprises still needs to keep up with the hype, Eid said. New technology adoption often takes many years before it matures and reaches broader market usage. The Nexus of Forces should be seen as a development rather than a package of products.

Data analytics, collaboration technologies, mobile devices and software-as-a-service (SaaS) have been present on the market of more than ten years and their adoption and popularity have seen a notable increase over the past few years. Vendors continue to improve their offerings and the benefits are becoming tangible. Gartner projects that growth rates and the generation of new revenue driven by the Nexus of Forces will impact the enterprise software market so much that it will outpace the overall market growth through 2017.

Over the coming years, providing an enterprise-class support for mobile applications and data, as well as rising on top of the current organization architectures will be of significant importance. This will be mainly boosted by technologies such as enterprise mobile management systems, enterprise application stores, mobile collaboration and mobile containers.

Smartphone and tablet users demand mobile applications that make use of the devices’ features and that can be integrated into enterprise systems. The trend will boost the application software market further and a mobile application product strategy will become of significant importance for every application vendor.
